Plus de 78 type de masques différents font partie des cérémonies Dogon.
Ils ont tous pour constante des traits extrêmement stylisés et sont zoomorphe.
Si l'on arrive à reconnaître l'animal associé à chaque masque, sa signification par contre n'était connue que par le plus haut dignitaire de chaque culte.
Son rôle était alors d'expliquer aux spectateurs attentifs aux danses, l'histoire associée à chaque masque.
Le masque présenté ici est associé au crocodile, surmonté d'une figure d'ancêtre se cachant la face des deux mains.
Le crocodile est une figure importante chez les dogons. La légende raconte qu'un dignitaire, Nangabourou qui avait soif, suivit un crocodile et découvrit une rivière ; il fonda en cet endroit Bandiagara ; les crocodiles sont sacrés en pays Dogon et figurent sur leurs sculptures.
Lart est illustré également par l’eau, les rivières, les chiens, les phacochères, les branchages et les feuilles.
